DIRECTOR PRODUCT DESIGN/DEVELOPMENT


DUTIES: Provide direction and management in the design and development of ready to assemble wood and metal furniture and accessories. Prepare sketches of ideas, detailed drawings, illustrations, and artwork using metric and imperial measurement. Confer with engineering, marketing, production, sales departments, and customers to establish and evaluate design concepts for manufactured products. Modify and refine designs using working models or drawings to conform with customer specified applications, production limitations, or changes in design trends and assembly and distribution criteria. Direct and coordinate the fabrication of models or prototypes and the drafting of working drawings and specification sheets from sketches. Evaluate feasibility of design ideas, based on factors such as appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, production costs/methods, material and hardware specification, limitations, and market characteristics. Present designs and reports to customers or design committees for approval, and discuss need for modification. Investigate product characteristics such as the product's safety and handling qualities, its market appeal, and ways of distributing and assembling the product. Develop manufacturing procedures -- bills of materials, packaging, and identifying and approving factories. Develop and demonstrate assembly instructions for ready to assemble furniture using drawings and electronic media. Serve as Conduct Liaison with foreign factories in development of prototypes and in changes/modifications/improvements in manufacturing of products. Monitor the manufacture of their designs in a factory to improve operations and product quality. Research production specifications, costs, production materials, and manufacturing methods, and provide cost estimates and itemized production requirements. Participate in new product planning or market research, including studying the potential need for new products. Manage local and international agents to ensure on-time production and delivery; developing reporting systems and measurement criteria. Train local and international staff in Quality Control Metrics. Develop materials for training of local and international staff, service partners, suppliers, and customers. Perform on-site inspections of local and international manufacturing and distribution facilities. Understand and improve Quality Control metrics and processes. Develop reporting mechanisms for Quality Control and ensure compliance with local and international standards of approval. Develop online and in-house procedures to assure on-time shipping and delivery and accurate freight forwarding.


REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma (foreign diploma acceptable). 8 years experience in product development/design. Will also accept Bachelors Degree in Commercial Design or related field in lieu of 4 years of experience. Demonstrable ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications using various electronic media. Demonstrable experience in preparing materials specifications including wood, metals, and imperial/metric conversions. Demonstrable ability to setup processes and procedures and develop systems to manage operational functions between local and international staff, suppliers, service partners, and customers. Demonstrable ability to perform cost analysis and negotiate pricing from factories. Demonstrable knowledge of setting up of quality control testing requirements to assure product/manufacturing quality. Working knowledge of, and the ability to communicate with, local and international manufacturers using various international standards of approval including ROHS and other certifications. Demonstrable knowledge of international freight forwarding issues including shipping, Harmonized Tariff Code determination, Customs clearance (local and international), and domestic transportation. Must work after hours and on weekends to communicate with international suppliers and customers. Must travel domestically 2-3 times per month and internationally 2-3 times per year.
